Emergence is a word that describes a very interesting phenomenon, during which, agents of similar types, come together and are able to cooperatively build a new structure that is more than the sum of the parts. Adam Smith referred to it as the "invisible hand". This type of emergence is also called strong emergence. This behavior is now well known, even though the reasons behind it are not well understood. The concept of emergence is directly connected with the concept of complex adaptive systems. Agents that work cooperatively, form complex adaptive systems. For M2MSys® this is paramount. We strive to enforce adaptability in our systems by building them as agents that have the ability to collaborate with other agents.
