More than a decade has passed over the approval of the HIPAA Legislation and the process is far from complete. What was supposed to be a cost saving strategy has proved to be a source of difficult and costly challenges.
In its 2006 June letter about the 10 year anniversary of the HIPAA implementation, the National Committee of Vital and Health Statics that made a 10 year analyze published a letter of recommendations and that is being reproduced below. Accordingly to the NCVHS the issues can be summarized as follows: - Piece meals approaches focused too narrowly only the revenue transactions (837, 835, 820), leaving behind the all other transactions. As a consequence, systems are not able to interact in a fully automated way and processing time is far from reach real-time status. Both are necessary to achieve the savings associated with real-time processing.
- The HIPAA standard change management is not flexible. Change requests take too long and contribute towards the general impression that HIPAA doesn't leverage the desired results.
At M2Msys® we concentrate on holistic solutions. We look at HIPAA as being part of something bigger and the first step towards the total interoperability of all Medicaid/Medicare system across the country. Such system will be able to reduce healthcare costs and increase quality of care.
